Tech giant Google is set to end its blanket ban on cryptocurrency-related advertising.

The American multinational technology company will afford regulated cryptocurrency exchanges the ability to buy ads in both the United States and Japan, starting in October.

The announcement comes by way of an official update.

Google

For Your Own Protection

As noted by CNBC, Google originally announced in March its intention to protect consumers by restricting ads relating to initial coin offerings (ICOs), wallets, and other cryptocurrency related products or topics. The restrictions were implemented in June. According to the update, these advertisements will still be banned.

Slowing Crypto’s Roll

Google itself is interested in the promise of blockchain technology and has partnered with New York-based blockchain startup Digital Asset and similar startup BlockApps earlier this year.

Some have suggested that Google’s ban on cryptocurrency-related advertising was less a move to protect users and more a move to hamstring the nascent industry while tech behemoth makes moves to get itself involved in blockchain and distributed ledger technology.
